What makes mosquito repellents effective and safe?

It has been shown that the most effective active chemicals for mosquito repellent are diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin.  If you do not wish to use chemicals but rather have natural ingredients to prevent mosquito bites, the oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane-3,8-diol,PMD) and other essential oils can provide long-lasting protection.

As warmer weather heads our way, so will pesky mosquitoes. Effective repellent is vital to help reduce the spread of diseases like Zika and dengue. What exactly makes a repellent natural?  “I would consider a natural repellent to be one that consists of an active compounds that are either extracted and purified directly from a plant source,” says Dana C. Price, Ph.D., associate research professor in the entomology department at Rutgers, The State University.

If you’re like many people who want to lower the exposure to certain chemicals and turn to natural bug sprays, TIME has the perfect essential oil blend for you!

TIME’s Mosquito Buster composes of most of the essential oils in the Aroma Armour Protection plus Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil.  The oil of Lemon Eucalyptus has been recognized by the EPA as a repellent in 2000, and has since become quite popular,

The refreshing scent of lemon eucalyptus essential oil makes it a popular natural insect repellant. Extracted from the leaves of this gum tree, lemon eucalyptus oil also contains large amounts of citronellal, in addition to the terpenes eucalyptol and limonene.7

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) claims that oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE or PMB) can be used as an effective repellent for mosquitoes.
